Not published yet, but I hid one on Bald Mountain about 475 feet from the lookout tower. I named it "Bald is Beautiful" (GC15X90).
My cache A. Spring is about 8 miles south if you really want to see the Oregon Outback.
The Forest Service is still tearing down towers. Ask the Winema if they intend to fix or tear down the one at Applegate Butte. All that is missing from this one is the floor. 42* 42.42N several miles east of US 97.

The response from Aermotor Windmill Company is:

"We sell a blueprint of a 100 ft. fire tower for $175.00 plus shipping. We no longer build them..."

I doubt if I can get one built seeing as we are in a flight path for the redmond Airport.

Back to the drawing board I guess.

If I grow 6 Larch in a certain pattern and if I water and fertilize them real good.......

How about building a smaller "to scale" one? That'd be pretty dang cool, too!

Yea, we are debating on building a shop so it is possible we will have a semi tower on one end of it. Somewhere around 35 feet or so above the building. Extra large cupola type thing.

Hey thanks for adding more lookout caches Mark and Tom! That is a wonderful part of this challenge. I look forward to returning your way to find some of them.

Maybe this weekend someone could put one up at the Green Ridge LO.

If anyone is interested, I can tell you where the secret trail is that I found out near Castle Rocks..........

I went up to Green Ridge to place a cache last Monday and ran into a gate and wasen't sure where the Look out was past the gate. I called a friend of mine that works at the LO and he told me the LO is .25 miles past the gate. I may try and place it there on Friday after I set up camp.

Fire Lookout caches

Postby tomfuller on Sun Sep 16, 2007 8:05 pm

Thanks logscaler & Red for planting a cache at the "other" Bald Mountain.
My most recently placed cache has an active fire tower that you MAY NOT climb up. Try to avoid talking to, or even being seen by the towerman.
My cache is named Bald is Beautiful (GC15X90). If you come for this one, plan on solving A. Spring which at 7.7 miles, is the nearest cache
The cache on Odell Butte, ODELL 7007 was found on Saturday and had a DNF on Sunday.
I'm glad to help out with the Fire lookout challenge but am not planning on taking any more statewide trips.

We have placed two more out in the South central Oregon area - Slide Mtn and Bald Butte.

Very nice drive out that way if you enjoy high elevation, Golden Aspens, Old Growth Pine, Deer, Elk, Big Cats, Meadows, isolation, stars, etc. Other then that, not much happens out thataway.

Green Ridge Lookout is now published and ready to find. However, it has already been found at least three times from the cache camp. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_de ... 1c07fbe2c6

Bald Mountain vs. Bald Butte

Postby tomfuller on Mon Sep 17, 2007 12:05 pm

Now there should be enough Fire lookout caches in Area 4. logscaler put one on Bald Butte and I put mine on Bald Mountain. Mine is GC15X90 (Bald is Beautiful).

post moved to Hiding forum

Postby bigeddy on Wed Sep 19, 2007 8:38 am

I moved the post on a denied lookout cache in the Monument Rock Wilderness to the Hiding forum because this is an important subject and deserves its own topic.

If the cache is published later--it may be just a matter of getting verbal approval from a ranger--then by all means post the news in this thread.

That last trip was 1300 + miles round trip for a three day weekend.

But 3 FTF's also.

As I add it up, we have so far used 59 lookouts totaling 328,897 +/- feet elevation for and average of 5,575 feet per lookout.

The lowest was at 1,479 feet and the highest was 9,026 feet.

I would like to break 500,000 feet just to say we did.

Yes, we will keep looking for and finding lookouts. Maybe not as hot and heavy as up to this point.

We have one more cache to place this summer - We will let you know when it is active - to complete our cache placement quest. (Until something else comes up or along that is.)

So far we score it as FTF for the DeLorme, National Forest (only finders so far, who's next?) and Fire Lookout Tower challenges. (Who is next?) Isn't that enough? 8-[ 8-[

One could do these three challenges plus the CCIO at the same time. I would think one could do all of them in a solid week of caching if you planned it right.

Any other challenges - Fizzymagic I know - out there? (Don't tell Red.)

Rumor has it that PMOguy is next...

What is the National Forest one? I could only find: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=84929cd4-29c7-4dc8-978a-510c4d6a5f4e

Here it is for you to look at.

GCYH5Q - blazerfan & SallyC's Revenge

As I understand it, several of the National Forest have been combined in the last year or so.

I am not sure what requirements are now, I know we had a lot of miles to cover to finish it.

Combine all the challenge caches together to make things easier. Also carpool will help a lot as well.
