Just to bring this one back to the top.

I placed a new lookout cache today, Agency Hill on Klamath Marsh, Above Klamath Agency.

That makes a total of 27 lookout caches we have out.

We are headed out in the morning to place a new lookout cache too... if the roads are open!

I struck out on Agency Hill. You can read my DNF. 40 minutes looking over and under 1600 square feet of rocky hillside and I started calling Neal Rockpiler instead of logscaler.

Sorry Tom.

It is a 7 cup, not 7 Quart, container.

I only moved ONE rock to hide the cache.

It is close to the bore hole.

Fire lookout caches are about the only ones we've been doing lately.

Yesterday, we headed south to Spring Butte (no Tom Fuller, no lookout at all). We ran out of time to get to Bald Butte but found time to stop at Big Hole Butte LO. Couldn't log it because it is Premium but it was a nice place to visit.

Any suggestions for unique lookouts?

Just for you Chief.

You might try the Slide Mountain cache we have near Summer Lake or any of the Lookouts North of John Day.

Here are a few:

Not sure why this lookout is not on Rex's list.
Cultus http://coord.info/GCX7FC

Here is one that I'd also like to visit:
Fuji Mt Cache http://coord.info/GCYTN6

And finally, a shameless plug for one of my lookout caches:
Maiden Peak 10-8 http://coord.info/GC1YMT3 8)

No lookout work for me this year. I did manage to get up to the top of Fuji Mt. If you are working on the 1 year+ challenge, my Warner Ridge LOT GC20W7Y has not been found in over 13 months. Warner Ridge in the Willamette NF is a lookout tower with a cupola. Get up there before the deep snow comes.
There were fresh elk tracks within 6 feet of the cache when I hid it.

Speaking of lookouts, PMO and I went to the remote Rebel Rock Lookout a week ago. Although it was a long 30 miles (yes, 30), it might be easier than the shorter 5-1/2 miles from the McKenzie side. That was steep, even for going down.

We left Elk Lake at daylight on Thursday and traveled 12 miles to Wildcat Swamp. Passing Horse Lake, we trekked on westward on decreasingly traveled trail. The last section was done on a trail that had been abandoned for more than 40 years. During this stretch, we passed up on water at a spring and would spend the rest of the day regretting it. Upon reaching Wildcat Swamp, we didn't see water and chose to hike another 3 miles RT to a place he knew had water. Ironically, we found water within 200 ft of camp the next day.

The following night was spent at a spring (water was short up here this time of year). It had been a long stretch from the swamp.

On Saturday, we did a 2 mile bushwack over Rebel Rock before descending a bit to the lookout. This was on Mark's bucket list so what could I say. Through Vine Maple and Huckleberry, over giant Hemlock logs, some fingerholds on basalt. All this with 30 lb packs on our backs. We eventually ate our lunch on the top with the giant monolith not 100 ft away. From there we cross countried west to the lookout.

The lookout is still there and in pretty good shape. I drooled at the thought of spending a summer up here rebuilding this quaint building. Not likely. It has a great view of the upper Mckenzie river drainage and the Cascades all the way to Diamond Peak. To visit this lookout you need to be committed. From the Rebel Rock trailhead, it is a long 5-1/2 miles straight up.

That was a great adventure and I had to share. 35 miles in 3 days. It was one of the most moderate yet challenging hikes I've done lately. Thanks Mark

Now that is an ideal location for a challenge virutal!

I have posted one at Boca Cave

Glad you guys got to take your trip. Mark looks nice and comfy around that fire. What's that in his hand- a bible or a whiskey flask?

Thanks Jen...we missed you. You'd of loved the trip...hiking for 3 days and not seeing one logged area except for the trail!
In my hand, a bible? [-o< Not likely. [-X That is mt "flask" cup and it contained Beeler Springs water and a liberal dollop of 106 proof Swiss Absinthe. It is a sure cure for the aches and pains of the days hike!
Chief and I discussed an idea for a virtual up there. As noted though it IS a booger to get too from any direction. It reminds me of a log entry entry written about the Mislatnah hike ... "You will have to kick your own ass to get up there"
